Determination of chemical composition and gas production parameters of some rangeland plants species of Kurdistan province

Abstract

The current study was carried out to determine chemical composition and some fermentation parameters of five rangeland plants species in Saral rangelands of Kurdistan province including Ferula haussknechtii, Astragalus curvirostris Boiss, Astragalus angustiflorus, Poa bulbosa var vivipara and  Hypericum scabrum at three phonology stages(before flowering, flowering and seed yielding) using gas test technique. Gas production was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 h of incubation. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design. Results of this study showed that crude protein content of Astragalus angustiflorus at three phenology stages were the highest (P<0.05). Also, concentration of neutral detergent fiber were highest in Astragalus angustiflorus and lowest in Astragalus curvirostris Boiss at three phenology stage (P<0.05). In addition, gas production, prejected metabolizable energy and digestible organic matter of Astragalus angustiflorus and Ferula haussknechtii at all three phenology stage were the highest (P<0.05) relative to those of the others. The results of the present study showed that Astragalus angustiflorus and Ferula haussknechtii had the highest nutritive value. The nutritive value of test feeds decreased with the advancement of growth stage.
